The flying conditions are a mix of the dynamic component with some interesting thermals.

Sometimes, strong confluences, or strong lift happen, in this case, aim toward the sea to get back down.

Also, thermal cycles can be very deceiving, and you can easily get trapped. I would advise not to go below 375m when east of the takeoff, or 340m when north of the take off. There you will see a discontinuity in the ridge, forming a cliff above a plateau. Don’t fly bellow the cliff, or you will be at risk to go around the plateau before heading toward the beach. If this happens you'll probably be unable to fly to the beach (emergency landing is possible in the fields on the ridge toward the Beach, or in last resort in the villas down near the sea).

General Description

San Bastiano is a pass between two of the mains Gulfs in Corsica: The Gulf of Ajaccio south and the Gulf of Sagone north. At this pass there is a small Chapel that gives it name to the site of La Chapelle sitting just few hundred meters away, at the Punta Vida.

The site of San Bastiano often offers more guaranties than the site of La Chapelle, as it sits 220m higher and offers more take-off opportunities. However, the site of La Chapelle allows for quicker turnaround time, less walk from parking and possibility to fly when there is more wind in altitude. Plus, when conditions are good, you can easily soar up to the top of San Bastiano.

Flight Description

Takeoff and head left along the ridge where thermals occur, and dynamic effect helps a bit. When you’re too low, fly to the beach.
Repeat the process as much as wanted. Hitchhiking works well to go back up.

Restrictions

Private land. Respect the site.

Don't park in front of the restaurant, prefer the dirt parking bellow on the Pevani's road.

In season don't land on the southern most part of the beach, near the tennis courts. It is the workplace of a professional paraglider and tenant of other diverse tourist attractions.

Airpace Specificities

La Chapelle is situated under TMA Ajaccio 1 that starts at 2000ft/610m above surface or at 2500ft/762m above mean sea level.
When conditions are good, you'll come to this limit very quickly.
If you transition to San Bastiano, keep in mind the CTR that starts more south in the Listincone pass.

Keep in mind those landmarks when flying:

Punta Vida (summit at takeoff): 1525fr/465m AMSL

Capu di U monte (small summit west): 1417ft/432m AMSL

San Bastino take off site: 2244ft/684m AMSL

Punta Mulendinu (summit between San Bastiano takeoff and La Chapelle): 2030ft/619m AMSL

Punta San Sistro (highest point to the east): 2874ft/876m AMSL

Planes follow a VFR approach to the airport through the Listincone pass to the south east. They approach from the sea at low altitude. The site is situated straight in their path, you wouldn’t want to mess with those birds.
